Sheerwater hosted AFC Whyteleafe who are chasing promotion and are also in the Semi-Final of the FA Vase where they will face Andover New Street over two legs. They have assembled a very expensive squad and it was a test TJ Barbato and his squad relished before kick-off.
A debut was given to Drew Churchwell in goal with Sheerwater having signed him from Horley Town and also starting were Jake Horn and Theo White who were absent last week. There was a clear game-plan to frustrate the visitors with a defensive shape sitting deep and not allowing space in behind. It meant AFC Whyteleafe saw plenty of the ball and they passed and passed before spotting an opening. Sheerwater as a whole team stuck to their task but inevitably chances would come but not clear cut where they opened up the Sheers. Churchwell was called upon to deny Watson with a full length dive to his left to palm the ball away. De Melo and Bennett were very tricky and both got shots off that were easily dealt with by Churchwell. Gondoh played a neat one-two and lofted the ball over the advancing Churchwell but the ball went wide.
Sheerwater got forward on occasions and Elliott York took a few long throws that caused problems but no clear cut chances developed. Theo White tricked his way into a couple of dangerous positons and set up Seb Rowland but he was denied by Leafe keeper, Boahmer.
As the half progressed AFC Whyteleafe became more frustrated and they tried to rush things but Liam Avery and Mek McLaughlin were solid as a central defender pairing and it remained level at the break.
The second half followed the same pattern but Jake Horn and White got Sheerwater forward more and it was an even contest. York saw an effort cleared and White put a dangerous cross in but it was cleared. It was whilst Sheerwater were attacking that AFC Whyteleafe took the lead on fifty-six minutes. A Sheerwater corner was cleared to the edge of the box and Emanuel Osei was robbed and a fast break saw Gondoh fire in from eight yards. The visitors pushed hard for a second but again Sheerwater were organised and got important tackles in. They also pushed forward more and chance came. White got into the box and fired into the side netting. Two big chances came within a minute of each other. Substitute Byron Mitchell pounced on a loose ball and advanced before firing a decent effort just wide and then a minute later Harvey Valter had an effort from a similar distance and again it was just wide.
Whyteleafe wrapped the game up in the final minutes with two goals. On eighty-seven minutes a corner from the left was powered in by the head of Corey Holder and in the ninety-second minute Hall shot from eighteen yards and a big deflection gave Churchwell no chance.
A final score of 3-0 was a bit harsh on Sheerwater who had worked their socks off against a very good side.
